The extracellular matrix is a crucial component in all mammalian tissue responsible for protecting our cells, and maintaining the daily working function of our bodies. How are spectroscopic techniques such as Raman and Brillouin light scattering improving our understanding of this biological complex composite material, and what are the implications for advances in the future diagnosis of pathology? We look at fibrous collagen and elastin, the main proteins that make up the structure of the extracellular matrix and explore how changes in hydration, a marker for disease, affect the mechanical properties of the fibres.
